Andy Sugg
Leading Australian sax player Andy Sugg returns to CJC with a stellar double tenor quintet lineup!
Andy Sugg is a renowned Australian saxophonist and band leader based in Melbourne, who’s no stranger to CJC, nor to fellow tenorist Roger Manins.
Andy and Roger’s collaboration goes back a long way, starting with the powerhouse three-sax group TTTenor (which also included John Mackey), and most recently with heavyweight bassist Gene Perla (USA).
They share great respect and admiration for each other’s playing and challenge and spur each other on on-stage with for fiery exchanges of notes.
The tenors are joined for this New Zealand tour by Kevin Field on piano, with bassist Umar Zakaria and Mark Lockett on drums, both from Wellington, filling out the rhythm section.
For these special gigs, Andy will be premiering a collection of original tunes, which together with some choice standards, make great vehicles for improvisation in the best tradition of contemporary jazz.
“Brilliant, sparkling, strongly surging... Sugg is a high order musician.”
