Cold-Flame: Brushstrokes & Verses
Cold-Flame is the brainchild of Wyn Leng, a young and rising vocalist and singer-songwriter who moved to Aotearoa from China in 2021. She has performed as part of the Wāhine in Jazz collective at places including the Wellington Jazz Festival and Auckland Art Gallery.
Since graduating from jazz school, she has gone on to pursue a postgraduate degree in Anthropology, continuing to translate what sparks her thinking about life into musical language.
This time, Wyn Leng brings an array of original compositions inspired by other art forms like poetry, paintings, and films.
Her musical sensibility blends her affinity for Chinese folk music, classical piano training in Hungary, and her jazz education into a sound that is impressionistic and deeply narrative.
Improvisation is a way to unleash feeling and paint an emotional landscape with notes and rhythm in real time.
She brings a band who are all fast becoming well-recognised faces at CJC and around the Auckland scene: Iggy Nama Ruci on flute and saxophones, Michael Nash on piano, Tyler Diprose on double bass, and Max Crook on drums.
Presented in association with Wahine in Jazz.
