Radiophonics
Chris Mason-Battley is a seasoned explorer of new territory at the boundaries of the Jazz world. From co-founding the pioneering Jazz-Funk unit Blue Train in the early 90’s, to the four albums recorded as leader of the Chris Mason-Battley Group his musical impetus has relentlessly sought out new directions that expand the sonic possibilities of the Jazz genre.
In recent years, Chris has continued his sonic journeying, both academically and on the arranging and performing front. His postgraduate study at Auckland University has explored creative ways of expanding the saxophone’s role through electronic processing: from harmonisation to sound manipulation and interactive performance technology.
Over the same period, Chris formed The Radiophonics, fusing jazz with iconic rock and pop. Inspired by artists such as The Bad Plus and Robert Glasper, The Radiophonics perform Chris’s grooving funk, latin and swing arrangements of classics - from The Beatles to Nirvana, via Stevie Wonder, The Police and more.
Don’t miss this night of sonic exploration - featuring fresh innovative music from Chris’s current music projects.
