Fearless Collective
Led and mentored by award-winning bassist and bandleader Umar Zakaria, Fearless Collective unites a group of promising young Wellington-based jazz artists around the concept of ‘Fearless Music’, the very same ethos that drove the Tui-winning album of the same name: by facing up to personal challenges as part of the creative process, they aim to create music that can inspire audiences to do the same.
Musically, the group emphasises intensity, imagination, the development of players’ individual voices and a collective process of shared decision making onstage, encouraging the continual discovery of new approaches to their own original compositions and co-creating unpredictable arrangements and re-arrangements in the moment.
