Jonathan Crayford wins Jazz Album of the Year at the 2017 New Zealand Jazz Awards

Auckland-based pianist Jonathan Crayford has won the 2017 Jazz Album of The Year for his album EAST WEST MOON, awarded in a ceremony on Sunday, the last day of The Wellington Jazz Festival.

EAST WEST MOON is Crayford's second album with a New York based group of Ben Street (bass) and Dan Weiss (drums), the previous Dark Light having been a finalist in 2015. Both albums were released on the Rattle Jazz label.

The first time the awards have been held in Wellington, the ceremony also recognised guitarist Callum Allardice for Best Jazz Composition for his song Deep Thought. Winning for the second year running, he is the only musician to have won since the award's introduction in 2016.

Guitarist Brad Kang was also presented the People's Choice Award from the Wellington Jazz Festival, for his performance at St Peter's Church.
