10 May 2017 - Tim Sellars "Mukhlisa" (CHCH) @ The Thirsty Dog
469 Karangahape Rd
Tim Sellars is a freelance drummer/percussionist based in Christchurch. His versatility has him playing frequently around the city; most notably playing in the settings of Jazz, Pop, World, recording sessions, and musical theatre. Tim has also spent time overseas playing on various cruise lines in both the Jazz Trio and the showband settings. He has a Bachelor of Music with Honours (majoring in Jazz Drum Set) and a Teaching Diploma from the University of Canterbury. During his Honours study, he was exposed to the percussion instruments of the Middle East and thrived at the challenge of playing them in both a traditional ensemble and with various instrumental line-ups.
Mukhlisa is a world music group that blends Western instruments and Jazz harmony with the Middle-Eastern percussion instruments. This makes for an exciting, fresh sound with plenty of energy and passion. Mukhlisa was first showcased at Christchurch's New Music Collective "World of Jazz" night in 2012. Since then, they have featured in other NMC events, various Jazz and Blues festivals in Christchurch, and played in Auckland for the first time as part of the CJC concert series in 2015.
Mukhlisa recently recorded their first studio album, “The Puzzle”, which will be released here at CJC. This album and concert will showcase the beautiful sounds and playing of Christchurch musicians Tim Sellars (percussion), Tamara Smith (flute), Glen Wagstaff (guitar), and Michael Story (Upright bass).
